TIP: Keep It Together With Proximity
Using proximity when designing a page is often difficult for novice designers. It takes quite a bit of effort to look at what information there is to work with and then make decisions on where it should sit in the design.
In today’s example, I have a list of programs offered by a musical group. As you will see in the “before” image, the list runs together, making it tough to tell what belongs to what.
Part of the reason for this is that the typeface headers (“Schools Shows” “Community Shows” etc.) are only slightly bolder than the sub sections and they are evenly spaced making it difficult to tell the difference.
By grouping the content on the page a little better and by using contrast (which is discussed here), it is easier for the viewer to tell what belongs together.
Reducing how much your audience has to work should always be your objective. Proximity is one powerful way to make this happen.
