Kick Yourself! Back and forth.
My type of work goes through different phases and can shift quite a lot from day to day. It’s a juggling act sometimes when I’m doing small bits of work for several clients where the “back-and-forth” nature of it makes for a challenging work day that forces many mind shifts. Last Friday was just such a day.
After working recently on administering the Community Presenters Assistance program, I’m just now getting caught up again on more of my graphic design-based work. One of my favourite and most enjoyable clients to work with is Bill Usher, Executive Director of Kicking Horse Culture in Golden, BC. The new performance season is starting to roll out for them so it means creating considerable promotional pieces.

Yesterday, I competed their “Kick Yourself!” logo that will be used on various advertising and promotional pieces throughout the year. The idea is that “you will kick yourself” if you don’t attend an event. I went through a number of iterations with it before we settled on a couple that could be used in different settings. Bill is an example of a client who has lots of good ideas and brings them forward.
The first couple of posters for the fall season were needed so I got busy with one for Barney Bentall and The Shirleys. The footers of the posters stays the same each time. It feels like a lot of “stuff” but it needs to be there (such as the funder logos). Each poster is 13 x 19 inches and I supply it as a PDF which gets printed in Golden. I then create little thumbnail images of the posters which they put on the website announcing the show. Once that’s done, it’s time to move on to the newspaper ads for the shows.

Beginning this season Kicking Horse Culture is moving to a banner ad in the Golden Star that will run along the bottom of a page. Each banner ad will be updated once per week and feature the upcoming events. We’re trying this ad out this week.

Each of these items can involve up to ten emails back and forth with comments, changes, idea swaps and such. It certainly makes the brain keep hopping (or is that “kicking”). I better get on to the next job now or my next client will “kick my &s$…”
